Does My Insurance Cover Cleanings? Dental Benefits, Explained Simply

Dental insurance confuses almost everyone, and confused patients skip visits they've already paid for through their premiums. Here's the plain-English version we walk patients through at the front desk.

The 100-80-50 pattern

Most PPO dental plans group care into three tiers:

• Preventive (usually covered ~100%): cleanings, exams, and routine x-rays. For most plans, two cleanings a year cost you nothing out of pocket.
• Basic (usually ~80%): fillings, simple extractions, and similar repairs.
• Major (usually ~50%): crowns, bridges, dentures, and root canals.

So yes, your cleaning is very likely covered in full. Check your specific plan, or bring us your card and Nenita will check for you before your visit.

The three numbers that matter

Deductible: a small amount (often $50) you pay before basic and major coverage starts. It usually doesn't apply to preventive care. Annual maximum: the most your plan pays per year, commonly $1,000 to $2,000. Plan year: most reset January 1.

The use-it-or-lose-it problem

Unused benefits don't roll over. Every January, unclaimed cleanings and unspent annual maximums simply vanish. If it's fall and you haven't used your second cleaning, or you've been putting off a crown while your maximum sits untouched, November and December are exactly the right time to book.

The math that surprises people

A covered cleaning today routinely prevents a half-covered crown next year. Preventive care isn't just the cheapest dentistry; on most plans it's free, and it's the best return on the premiums you're already paying.
