What to Expect at Your First Dental Visit

Welcoming reception area at Dr. Jocelyn Reyes Family Dentistry in Tulare

If it's been a while since your last dental visit, the hardest part is usually just booking the appointment. Here's exactly what happens once you do, no surprises, no judgment.

Step 1: The welcome

You'll be greeted by Nenita at the front desk (likely the same person who called to confirm your appointment). New-patient paperwork takes about ten minutes, bring a photo ID, your insurance card if you have one, and a list of any medications.

Step 2: Digital x-rays

Quick and comfortable, with far less radiation than the film x-rays you might remember. Images appear on screen instantly.

Step 3: The exam

Dr. Reyes examines your teeth, gums, bite, and any existing dental work, and screens for oral cancer. If something needs a closer look, she may use our 3D scanner to show you your own teeth on the screen, most patients find this genuinely interesting rather than scary.

Step 4: The cleaning

When appropriate, you'll get a professional cleaning with our Cavitron ultrasonic scaler, much gentler than old-fashioned scraping. If significant gum disease is present, we'll schedule the correct deeper cleaning instead of rushing it.

Step 5: The conversation

This is the part patients tell us they appreciate most. Dr. Reyes explains what she found in plain language, answers every question, and gives you a written plan with priorities and pricing. Nothing is scheduled until you understand it and want it.

The bottom line

Plan for about an hour, bring your ID and insurance card, and expect to leave knowing exactly where you stand. Ready to get it on the calendar? Request an appointment and we'll call you back to confirm.
