Why Do My Gums Bleed When I Floss?

Here's the counterintuitive truth: if your gums bleed when you floss, the answer is almost never to stop flossing. It's usually to floss more.

What bleeding gums actually mean

Healthy gums don't bleed from normal brushing and flossing. Bleeding is inflammation, and inflammation is your immune system reacting to plaque bacteria sitting along and under the gumline. This early stage is called gingivitis, and it has one genuinely great feature: it's completely reversible.

Why stopping makes it worse

When flossing draws blood, most people back off. But the plaque that caused the inflammation stays put, hardens into tartar, and the inflammation deepens. Left alone long enough, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, where the bone supporting your teeth starts to break down. That stage is manageable but not reversible, which is why we take bleeding seriously while it's still the easy problem.

The two-week turnaround

For garden-variety gingivitis: brush twice daily along the gumline, floss gently once a day (curve the floss around each tooth in a C shape), and keep going even if the first few days bleed. Most patients see bleeding fade noticeably within one to two weeks. If it doesn't, or if your gums bleed heavily, look puffy and dark red, or you notice persistent bad breath, it's time for a professional evaluation.
